The state's unemployment rate rose from 5.3 percent to 5.5 percent between September and October.
The state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said the Massachusetts rate remains a full percentage point below the national rate, which went from 6.1 percent to 6.5 percent over the month.
The office said preliminary estimates show a loss of 7,000 jobs in October.
Some of the hardest hit sectors were trade, transportation and utilities, which lost 2,700 jobs; leisure and hospitality, which lost 1,600 and construction, which lost 2,300. Education and health services, usually a winner in bad economic times, lost 900 jobs, mainly due to jobs in educational services not returning to expected seasonal levels.
The state gained 1,100 jobs in the professional, scientific and business services sector and another 200 in the information field.
