Mass Layoffs Continue To Drop

The number of mass layoffs in the United States decreased for the sixth consecutive quarter to 1,393, according to a first-quarter report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The number of mass layoff events in the manufacturing sector dropped year-over-year from 441 to 281, but the number of mass layoffs in the construction sector rose to 338.

Almost half of the businesses that laid off workers expect to recall some of the employees.

Mass layoffs hit a recent high of 3,979 impacting 705,000 workers in the first quarter of 2009.

In Massachusetts, there were 25 mass layoffs impacting 3,545 workers, compared to 26 a year ago that impacted 3,335 employees.
