After losing 1,600 jobs in April, preliminary federal labor estimates indicated Massachusetts’ economy rebounded last month, gaining 9,100 jobs as the unemployment rate continued to fall, according to the Patrick administration.
Over the month, private sector jobs led the way, climbing some 8,800 as the overall unemployment rate dipped 0.4 percent from the April rate of 6 percent to 5.6 percent in May.
Job growth was fairly evenly spread among industries, with leisure and hospitality (up 4,200 jobs), education and health services (up 3,300 jobs) and financial activities (up 1,200 jobs) leading the way.
With the net addition of 47,000 jobs since May 2013, giving the state a total of 3.3 million employed residents, Massachusetts employs more people today than either in April 2008 – the highpoint before the latest recession – or prior to the recession in February 2001, the Administration said.
