Comparatively high electricity prices and the lofty cost of home heating oil earned Massachusetts a top spot on a WalletHub list of the most energy expensive states.
The analysis found only Connecticut ($380), Alaska ($332) and Rhode Island ($329) have higher total energy costs than Massachusetts, where the average monthly electric bill is $327.
The Bay State scored higher than average on several metrics, including the price of electricity (third), the price of natural gas (10th), natural gas consumption per customer (15th) and the price of home heating oil (seventh).
Washington, D.C. had the lowest electric bill on average, at $219 per month. All six New England states were ranked in the top 10 spots on the list.
