Brewers and restaurateurs looking to open or expand in MetroWest now have an extra incentive to choose Marlborough.
The city’s economic development corporation has started a financial assistance program, giving restaurants and brewpubs up to $15,000 for one year of rent and up to $10,000 for equipment expenses if they go with Marlborough, the agency announced Monday.
The program was designed to help restaurants expand or open a new location, and to help new brewers get on their feet sooner than usual, said Meredith Harris, executive director of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation. Brewers aren’t allowed to apply for licensing without a lease, but they also can’t start serving beer until the license is issued, which can take up to six months, she said.
“Since the business is unable to generate revenue in the meantime, this could become prohibitive for a new startup. So, our financial assistance program helps new restaurants and brewpubs by defraying some of their up-front costs,” said Harris.
Businesses can receive financial assistance by signing a multi-year lease in the city and demonstrating that the project wouldn’t be possible without the program.
