When the annual college men’s basketball tournament, also known as March Madness, begins next week, it may usher in a lift in morale and even productivity, according to a survey.
The survey by OfficeTeam suggests that half of senior managers interviewed said activities tied to the tournament – such as office pools focused on the 68-team brackets - boost employee morale, while 36 percent believe March Madness has a positive impact on workplace productivity.
That indicates a big lift over 2014. In a similar survey a year ago, 32 percent said the tournament-related activities boost morale while 27 percent cited higher productivity.
Only 6 percent of managers in the latest survey cited a drop in morale while 15 percent said interest surrounding the tournament was a drag on productivity.
"Employers that encourage staff to enjoy events like March Madness recognize that these activities don't have to be viewed as negative workplace distractions," Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam, said in a statement. "Organizing friendly contests or watching big games together can give employees much-needed breaks and opportunities to build camaraderie."
