Looking back to 1998: Digital Equipment is sold to Compaq

This year, the Worcester Business Journal marks its 25th anniversary. In each print edition, we will highlight a major event that took place within the Central Massachusetts business community between 1990 and 2014 and how that event impacts today's business scene.

Later this year, on Oct. 13, we will publish a special 25th Anniversary commemorative edition in which we will look at the companies and business leaders who made a difference in the region, and we'll look ahead to what the coming years could bring.

EVENT: Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC), long a symbol of Massachusetts' technological prowess, is sold for $9.6 billion to Compaq Computer, after approval by the Federal Trade Commission.

RECAP: DEC, which was based in Maynard until 1993, was a leading maker and seller of networked computer systems, software and services. At its peak, it generated annual revenue of more than $14 billion, employed more than 120,000, and was the world's second-largest computer company. But in an industry that changes constantly, DEC's products fell victim to the rise of the personal computer in the 1990s.

FAST FORWARD: Compaq itself was sold in 2002 to Hewlett-Packard, and DEC no longer has a presence through that firm in Central Massachusetts, although H-P's sites in Andover and Burlington live on.
