Local Affordable Housing Projects Get State Support

Gov. Deval Patrick announced Wednesday that the state is committing $71.3 million to support the creation and preservation of affordable housing across Massachusetts.

The money will support a total of 1,415 low-to-moderate income dwellings in 21 communities, including 22 dwellings in Worcester's Main South area.

The Worcester-based Main South Community Development Corp. will receive $396,000 in federal low-income housing tax credits and $2.2 million from the Department of Housing and Community Development to help complete the final 22 units of the Kilby-Gardner-Hammond Neighborhood Revitalization Project. When completed, the development will have a total 58 low-to-moderate income dwellings.

In Leominster, the Twin Cities Community Development Corp. will receive $3.3 million in DHCD funds as well as $686,300 in federal low-income housing tax credits for the Whitney Building, a 40-unit project with four dwellings for extremely low-income families (those who make less than 30 percent of the median area income).

In Berlin, the Montachusett Home Care Corp. and Berlin Retirement Homes Inc. will receive $2 million in DHCD funds for Northbrook Village II, a 40-unit development for low-income, elderly tenants.

In Sudbury, the Sudbury Housing Authority is in line for $1 million in DHCD funds for the Sudbury Duplexes, which will have 10 affordable units, six of them for extremely low-income families.

And in Northbridge, the redevelopment of an 18th century mill into affordable housing and retail space will get a boost from $60,000 in federal low-income housing credits. EA Fish Development LLC is developer on the project.
