The unemployment rates for the Worcester and Fitchburg areas fell in February, mirroring a statewide drop, the federal government said today.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said the jobless rate for the Worcester area in February fell to 7.9 percent in February from January, when it was 8.1 percent. In North Central Massachusetts, the rate ticked downward 0.1 percent to 10 percent.
The Worcester-area rate is second in the state to Boston's 6.6 percent. The area of the state with the highest unemployment rate is New Bedford, at 11.8 percent.
The statewide jobless rate for February was 7.5 percent, down from 7.7 percent in January and 8.2 percent in February 2011. Last week, the federal government said the nation's unemployment rate fell to 8.2 percent in March from 8.3 percent in February. But it also said there were only 120,000 jobs created last month, far below analysts' expectations of 200,000. That also broke a three-month streak in which the nation added 200,000 or more jobs a month.
