Jobless Rate Dips In Worcester, Other Markets

The unemployment rate in Worcester and five of the state's other labor areas declined between July and August, according to the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

Worcester's unemployment rate dipped slightly from 9.6 percent in July to 9.5 percent in August. The Amherst's rate declined from 6.9 percent in July to 5.6 percent last month. It was the largest decline of any of the state's labor markets and was attributed to the start of the school year.

Other labor markets to post unemployment rate declines were the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Peabody, Pittsfield and North Adams markets.

Statewide, the unemployment rate increased from 8.8 percent in July to 9.1 percent in August.
