Pharmacy College Opens Downtown Center

The construction at the corner of Foster and Commercial Streets in downtown Worcester culminated with the opening of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences' new $10 million academic center Monday.

The 30,000-square-foot center is at 40 Foster St., which the college purchased in August 2008. It is called the Ahmad H. Alhaddad building in honor of a class of 1986 alumnus who pledged $1.2 million to the college's Worcester campus.

The building was formerly the home of Protocol Integrated Direct Marketing, which is now at 120 Front St. The renovated facility includes a multi-purpose pharmacy laboratory, two 250-seat distance education auditoriums, three 50-seat "smart classrooms," 20 faculty offices and a student lounge.

The facility will help the college increase the number of pharmacy students it can accommodate over the next three years to 750 Doctor of Pharmacy students and a total of 1,000 students at the downtown Worcester campus.

The college's main building is across the street at 19 Foster St.

Worcester-based Francis Harvey & Sons Inc. oversaw construction at the new facility, which was designed by Stegman and Associates Architects of Boston and Kristine Stoller Interior Design of Sharon.

MCPHS also has campuses in Boston and Manchester, N.H.
