Jeffrey Cubberley is no stranger to financial institutions, but he is new to the world of credit unions. He recently joined Webster First Federal Credit Union as the organization's Whitinsville branch manager. His background includes stints at Wachovia and Sovereign Bank, so this is the first time he's worked at a nonprofit credit union. Here, he discusses the transition and what he loves about his job.
Residence: Whitinsville
Family: Wife and Son, Erin and Rhys
Education: University of Delaware, Villanova University
Previous job: Branch Manager, Sovereign Bank, Grafton
Start date at new job: June 29, 2009
Q. How are you settling in at your new office?
I'll be in my new office on Sept. 8. I've been in training in our new and beautiful operations center with my talented Assistant Manager, Shoba Vaidyanath. I have visited the Whitinsville office to meet the staff and I was impressed with their experience. I know they will be an important asset in getting to know the existing membership.
Q. What's the biggest surprise you've had in starting the job?
I am in awe of the technology that Webster First has in place. I've had the opportunity to work for a wide range of financial institutions from one of the largest nationals, to a medium regional and to now a county-sized credit union. I always assumed that size was the best advantage, the bigger the better. After witnessing the meltdown in the financial industry over the last 18 months and my initial experiences at Webster First, I can see now that is not the case.
Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
I think absorbing and integrating the cultural differences of the credit union into my commercial bank experience presents the most challenging part of my new position. I am so excited to be working exclusively in the interest of the membership rather than the shareholder, which I think is at the center of the cultural differences.
Q. How different is this job from your previous position?
For me, at the core they are identical. Managing and enhancing the member experience is where it all starts.
Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
Pretty far away! In high school I had dreams of being a military aviator. Eventually, after college I discovered that my strongest skill was working with people. I enjoy working with the public and take pleasure in enhancing their financial world. I pride myself on providing expertise tailored directly to the individual or an organization's needs.
Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
What is this "lunch" you speak of?! Seriously though, as a town resident I do have my favorites. Harry's Pizza is great and is the current favorite of the branch staff, too. I'm also a fan of King Jade if I need some Chinese food.
Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
I want to continue having fun at work, making a difference in the financial lives of our membership, add value to the organization daily and cherish every moment I can spend with those I love!
