Jeannie Hebert: Thriving On Challenge

Hebert

President and CEO, Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce, Whitinsville

Who is your most influential role model, and why?

Strong women have always been my role models, beginning with my mother, a tough little Brit. I lost her recently and have had time to reflect on how she molded my personality. Stiff upper lip, "keep calm and carry on" were certainly her mantras. She insisted on perfection, finish what you begin, always do your best, do not disappoint others and give back to the community. The uncompromising integrity and honesty she instilled have proven to be among the most important guides for myself in my professional and personal life. Dr. Jane Goodall is a woman I admire very much, an inspiration to millions and an inspiration to me in many areas of my life. I discovered her work when I was a freshman in high school and my dad, knowing my passion for animals, gave me her book, My Friends the Wild Chimpanzees.

What has helped you achieve success in your career?

I am a bit of a hard head, so when I set my mind to something I almost never give up. I consider my word to be my bond, so if I have made a commitment I follow it through to the end, no matter what. And I collaborate a lot. Especially here in the Blackstone Valley, collaboration is the only way we work. Whether it is within the 11 municipalities, bi-state with Rhode Island entities or outside the region, I always reach out. By doing so, I have gleaned much valuable information from experienced individuals that has been useful down the road. And most important, I have been fortunate in that I am surrounded by talented people.

What's your primary motivator; or if there is one thing that makes you tick or ignites a passion within you, what is it?

I enjoy a challenge. I love putting the puzzle pieces together to make the whole picture even when I am told there aren't enough there to make it work. There is no greater pleasure than seeing a project through to completion that at first seemed hopeless. Injustice also ignites a passion within me. If I find that someone or something has been discriminated against or treated cruelly, I am compelled to take action.

How does your organization give back to the community, and what role have you played in those efforts?

The Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce's mission is to provide leadership on issues which impact the economy and quality of life in the valley. So community development is the thread of everything we do. A myriad of programs have been created for the benefit of the community. From business seminars and classes to family festivals and expos, the chamber strives to offer assistance, add value and provide empowerment. I am very proud to have had a hand in the creation of Blackstone Valley Women's Business Networking, a bi-monthly luncheon group providing a forum for business women through leadership, networking, support, education, workshops and seminars.

When the stress level gets too high, how do you ease the pressure?

I enjoy a hot cup of tea and reading a good book with my white German shepherd, Spencer, at my side. He is a great listener and a trusty companion. Riding my bike, running and working out are enjoyable activities to refresh and renew. I also love to spend time with my two grandchildren, Eve and Jackson. Looking at the world through their eyes brings things into perspective. Music is a terrific stress reliever for me. Peter, my significant other is a talented musician. Listening to his music brings me great joy.

How have you tried to balance your career and your personal life? Please give an example or two.

My balance is a bit off kilter. I tend to work much more than I play. However, my family is very important to me, but they know my nature and are very understanding. I try to include my family in many of the chamber's activities. This is actually easier than it sounds because our activities are fun and they look forward to many of the annual ones.
