Holy Cross, Clark land on best-value list

The College of the Holy Cross and Clark University in Worcester have been named among the best college values in a new list by Kiplinger.

Holy Cross was named the 22nd best overall by value, while Clark was 28th among private colleges, and 82nd overall.

Holy Cross scored especially high thanks to its average need-based financial aid package of nearly $37,000, which goes a long way to offset the school's $68,000 annual cost. The college also has relatively high average salaries for its graduates, and relatively low debt at graduation.

For Clark, an average need-based financial aid package of nearly $27,000 offsets much of the average $56,000 annual cost. A far higher percentage than average — 69% of its students — receive aid packages not based on financial need.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was highest in the state, at 10th nationally. Thomas Aquinas College in California was first nationally.

In addition to looking at financial measures, Kiplinger, a business and finance publication, considers academic measures, including the student-to-faculty ratio, the test scores of incoming freshmen, and the percentage of students who return for their sophomore year.
