Marlborough medical device firm Hologic has launched a new scope designed to diagnose and treat women suffering from abnormal bleeding in the uterus.
The company on Monday announced the U.S. launch of its Omni hysteroscope, a device used by gynecologists to look in the uterine cavity for abnormalities.
The new scope, however, allows physicians to both diagnose and perform operations by using different sheaths. Previously, doctors would use different devices to perform the two activities.
Hologic received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval earlier this month.
In a statement, Medical Director and Vice President of Global Medical Affairs Edward Evantash, M.D., said experts agree that direct visualization of the uterine cavity in women with abnormal bleeding is the fold standard.
“Featuring three easily interchangeable sheaths in one scope, our new Omni scope gives physicians excellent visualization capabilities with the convenience of seeing and treating pathology in a more streamlined procedure,” he said.
