Harrington Breaks Ground On Cancer Center

Harrington Memorial Hospital broke ground this morning on a new $14 million, two-story cancer center hospital officials say will be completed next year.

The high-tech 21,000-square-foot cancer center will be on the edge of the Harrington campus, off South Street in Southbridge. It is being developed, and will be operated, by 21st Century Oncology of Fort Myers, Fla. At the ceremony this morning, 21st Century's H. Hugo Myslicki said developing the center at Harrington was "like coming home" for 21st Century, which was started by a group of oncologists from Harvard.

State Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, said the center would help the hospital provide cancer treatment to a local population that now must travel for that treatment. Hispanics, Moore said, have a higher instance of several types of cancer than the general population and the Southbridge area has a large Hispanic population, he noted.

The center is scheduled to open in the second half of 2009 and will include a chemotherapy suite, a linear accelerator and two types of radiation therapy. The center will also be the site of clinical trials, the hospital said.

Hospital officials this morning said it is unclear how many jobs the new cancer center will create.
