Many business people attend networking and other business events armed with a fist full of business cards, feeling they can only be successful if they hand them all out.
"That's kind of the old-fashioned way of networking," said Karen Burke of Mobius Business Coaching in Acton. Burke will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, May 12, during the Middlesex West Chamber of Commerce's Professional Women's Network. The event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Bonsai West, located at 100 Great Road in Acton. Bonsai West is a bonsai tree gallery and nursery.
Burke advises that networkers can be more effective when they focus on telling people exactly what they do and setting a goal on what to get out of the networking opportunity.
"It's not just about who I know, it's about who knows what I do," she said.
The key to effective networking is relationship building. And to build relationships Burke said networkers can accomplish this "by listening to what others are interested in and seeing where [their] interests align." Connecting well with one or two people is much better than superficially meeting a lot of people, she added.
Being of service to others is also an important part of networking, Burke said.
"If you had a conversation with someone about how they want to give their employees more confidence, and then you see an article about that, send it on to them," she said.
Registration is available here. The cost to attend is $11.50 for chamber members and $22 for non-members. The chamber can be contacted with questions at 978-263-0010.
