Cambridge-based Genzyme Corp. said it has begun shipping new vials of its Cerezyme drug manufactured at the Allston plant shut down earlier this year because of contamination.
The company said initial shipments of the Gaucher disease drug would be limited to what it called "the most vulnerable patients." By the end of the month, the company expects to be shipping the drug to patients who have had their treatments interrupted by the manufacturing stoppage.
Genzyme said supplies will be back to normal in the first quarter of next year.
The company is also preparing to begin shipping Frabrazyme, a treatment for Fabry disease, from the Allston plant once again.
The plant was shut down after inspectors found a virus there.
Genzyme has significant manufacturing and administrative operations in Framingham and elsewhere in MetroWest.
