Genoa Healthcare, a Washington-based specialized pharmacy care provider, will open its 700th location nationwide and 17th in Massachusetts in Framingham on Wednesday. Genoa’s model colocates pharmacies in established community mental health centers. This new location will add pharmacy services to Advocates in Framingham, a provider of mental health and behavioral health services.
Genoa’s pharmacies serve patients with chronic health conditions like HIV and complex behavioral health concerns. The model of building out pharmacy operations in established centers provides pharmacists the ability to be part of a coordinated care team.
The intention behind keeping clinical and pharmacy services in the same facility is to increase medication adherence and reduce hospitalizations and emergency room visits, according to a Tuesday press release from the company. Genoa is part of pharmacy care services company Optum Rx.
In July, Advocates in Framingham was one of four Central Massachusetts health organizations selected as a Community Behavioral Health Center by the state government. As a designee, Advocates is used to provide same-day evaluation and referral to treatment, and extended hours are earmarked to provide mental health treatment.
The new pharmacy will officially open at Advocates at 1094 Worcester Road in Framingham on Wednesday, following a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Massachusetts State Senate President Karen Spilka.
