Gas Price Drives Boston Inflation

The Boston Consumer Price Index was up 2 percent in March compared to last year, mostly thanks to rising energy prices, according to the New England Information Office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The energy index rose 16.6 percent over the year, with gasoline prices rising 27.4 percent. The food index rose 1.8 percent, while all other items increased only 0.5 percent.

The CPI rose less in Boston than in any of the other six metropolitan areas that the BLS released March data for. The Washington, D.C., area had the greatest increase at 3 percent.

The Boston CPI includes much of Eastern and Central Massachusetts as well as parts of New Hampshire, Maine and Connecticut.
