Franklin gets biotech industry nod
Franklin is as ready as it can possibly be for biotechnology companies, according to a statewide industry group.
The Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MassBio) upgraded Franklin’s biotech readiness (BioReady) status Friday from “gold” to “platinum” due to improvements in zoning bylaws, building codes and other business-related criteria.
“This award signifies the success of (the) Franklin Town Council’s continued efforts to promote a higher level of investment in the town’s industrial areas, increase employment options for the town’s residents, and increase the town’s commercial and industrial tax base,” Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting said in a statement.
Franklin joins seven other platinum communities in the region: Devens, Framingham, Grafton, Leominster, Marlborough, Westborough and Worcester.
The platinum distinction means Franklin has at least one building pre-permitted for biotech use, or has a shovel-ready pre-permitted land site with completed state environmental review and municipal water and sewer capacity to meet additional demand.
MassBio began the BioReady campaign in 2008 and has 77 communities with bronze, silver, gold or platinum designations.
