German conglomerate Siemens Metals Technologies has inked a deal that will involve the engineering and manufacture of copper rod mills in Worcester.
Siemens said the rolling mill and coiler equipment will be sold to Georgia-based Southwire Co. and used beginning in late 2015 in a Chinese facility owned by a copper manufacturer. The down payment on the order was received in late December, according to a spokeswoman for Siemens.
Work is already underway in Siemens’ Crescent Street facility on 11 roll stands, a 20-inch rotary shear and table and a delivery and pickling system. This will enable the Chinese firm Guangquing Copper Co. to produce 230,000 metric tons of copper rod per year in its new facility.
Siemens said it has built 80 mills for Southwire customers and upgraded 30 more over the past four decades.
