Fed: Slow Growth In New England

A new survey by the Federal Reserve finds that businesses in New England are growing, but remain uncertain about the future.

The latest edition of the “Beige Book,” which the Fed releases eight times a year, found that software and IT firms are most enthusiastic about demand for their products and are doing some new hiring.

Other industries are mostly doing only replacement hiring.

Retail businesses surveyed say their results are mixed right now, but they are hopeful about 2012. Manufacturers have been growing but are uncertain about the near future.

The area’s real estate market remains sluggish, and surveyed businesses in the industry say they don’t expect a quick improvement.
