Fallon Community Health Plan has named W. Patrick Hughes as its new president and CEO.
Hughes has been acting in that capacity since early February, when former president and CEO Eric Schultz left FCHP for the same role at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.
Harvard Pilgrim's former CEO, Charles Baker, left the post to become the Republican candidate for governor of Massachusetts.
FCHP is an insurer and health care provider. Hughes has been with the company since 2007, when he was hired as a senior vice president in its sales and marketing department.
Before joining FCHP, Hughes was head of W. P. Hughes & Co., a brokerage and consulting firm based in New Hampshire.
FCHP ended 2009 with a loss of nearly $30 million after turning a profit of $7 million the previous year. The company said rising health care costs and compliance with the state's universal insurance coverage law were to blame for the steep decline.
