Fabrizi gets city education department job

Outgoing Bridgeport Mayor John Fabrizi has landed a new job in the city's education department.

Fabrizi will make nearly $118,000 a year as assistant director of alternative and adult education and drop out prevention.

He'll start next month, after successor Bill Finch takes over as mayor. Fabrizi did not run for re-election after he admitted using cocaine while in office and was criticized for publicly supporting a sex offender in court.

Two school board members voted against the appointment after community groups asked that money being spent on new administrative positions instead be directed into the classroom. But six others voted to approve it.

Fabrizi is exercising his option to return under a memorandum he signed with the school system when he left to become mayor in 2003.
