EMC Corp. will go before the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen tonight to ask for up to $5.6 million in sewer abatements.
In requests filed with the town, the Hopkinton-based data storage vendor is asking for breaks on 15 parcels.
EMC is seeking abatements on two properties on South Street. The requested abatements total more than $1 million, citing that the charges are improper because they’re being assessed for the Fruit Street Wastewater Treatment Facility, which is more expensive than the Milford connection alternative.
On seven more South Street parcels and four Hayward Street properties, the costs total nearly $1.5 million. For them, EMC is seeking abatements on the grounds that the assessments “double count” the properties as using both the Fruit Street and Milford systems. The company said that’s wrong because wastewater from a particular property never flows to both systems at the same time, so the fees are charged for more capacity than EMC can use.
Two more South Street properties have a total assessment of $3.1 million. That includes the company’s headquarters at 176 South St., assessed at $2.1 million. EMC wants to cut its charges from those properties because it built its own wastewater treatment facility for them. EMC said it was forced to construct its own because the Milford system couldn’t accept flows from the two properties and that the parcels were added into the service area once the cost of the Fruit Street facility was higher than projected, although the properties weren’t using it.
