Electric grid managers to discuss changing system

The benefits and risks of the “dramatic transformation” underway in the region’s energy landscape will be the focus of a media briefing Wednesday.

ISO New England President Gordon van Welie, president of ISO New England, which runs the region’s bulk power system, will host the 11 a.m. informational briefing, the regional grid manager announced on Monday.

According to ISO, the transformation stems from a growing dependence on natural gas, the retirements of coal- and oil-fired and nuclear plants, and the growth of renewable and distributed energy resources.

During his inaugural address Jan. 8, Gov. Charlie Baker cited a link between economic growth and a sustainable, affordable energy supply.

“As we begin the New Year, families and businesses across New England are being hit with unprecedented increases in their energy and electric bills. At exactly the same time energy prices across the rest of the country are falling. This increase is being driven in large part by inadequate delivery systems, the result of poor planning and coordination,” Baker said, addressing a joint meeting of the House and Senate.
