Baker pegs budget gap at $765M

Twelve days after taking office, Gov. Charlie Baker has identified a $765 million gap in the current state budget.

Baker announced his estimate of the size of the budget problem following a staff meeting on Tuesday morning.

"Spending seems to be the primary issue here," Baker said. "We are not going to cut local aid to solve this problem.”

The $36.5 billion budget for fiscal year 2015 was passed in July. Five days into taking office, Baker instituted a hiring freeze and contract reviews while also releasing $100 million in local road and bridge funding, helping set a new record of $300 million released from that account in fiscal 2015.
