Electric Customers Urged To Conserve During Heat Wave

ISO New England Inc., the region’s grid operator, is asking customers to dial down energy use as it expects electricity consumption to hit near-record levels this week.

ISO New England said power system resources are adequate but supply is likely to become tight as the region faces high temperatures and humidity levels. It expects the highest peak demand to be Thursday at 27,800 megawatts (MW), about 2,000 MW less than last summer’s peak on July 17. The record for electricity usage is 28,130 MW, set on Aug. 2, 2006.

The organization suggests several tips to reduce electricity use, particularly between noon and 8 p.m. that it said will help keep the system reliable, such as:

• Raise air conditioning thermostats by a few degrees. A suggested temperature range is between 74 degrees and 78 degrees Fahrenheit;

• Turn off unneeded lights and appliances;

• Turn off unnecessary office equipment;

• Shut off air conditioners when leaving home for extended periods of time; and

• Do laundry and other chores requiring electricity in the early morning or late evening.
