The state is awarding $350,000 in planning grants to 26 innovation schools across Massachusetts, including eight in Central Massachusetts.
Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray announced the funding at Chandler Magnet School in Worcester this morning.
The grants will help local school districts write instructional and operational plans for the schools, most of which could open as early as September 2011.
In Worcester, the grants provide $14,850 each for Chandler Magnet School and Woodland Academy, $12,900 for University Park Campus School, and $12,250 each for Goddard School of Science & Technology and Goddard Scholars Academy.
Elsewhere in Central Massachusetts, they offer $15,000 each for the proposed Wilson International School in Framingham, the Quaboag Innovation STEM Early College High School in the Quaboag Regional School District and Baccalaureate School of North Middlesex in the North Middlesex Regional School District.
Innovation schools are intended to offer educators a similar flexibility to public charter schools while operating within existing school districts. There are three innovation schools now operating in the state, including the Pathways Early College Innovation School at Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner.
