The state Department of Public Utilities issued a ruling yesterday that cuts down a rate request from Unitil, the New Hampshire-based provider of gas and electric services to communities in the Fitchburg area, by $4.6 million or 40 percent.
Under the approved rates, regular residential customers will see an average monthly increase to their bills of $6.08. Residential gas customers will pay $27.70 more during the winter months and $4.51 more in the summer.
Unitil, through its subsidiary Fitchburg Gas & Electric, had requested an increase in its revenues of more than $7.1 million for its electric division and $4.4 million for its gas division. The DPU ruled to reduce the electric revenue request by 54.2 percent to $3.3 million and the gas revenue request by 16.3 percent to $3.7 million.
The DPU also denied 31 percent of the $22 million in 2008 ice storm-related expenses the company sought to recover, stating in a press release that Fitchburg Gas & Electric's "lack of planning and training for a significant storm event left it unprepared to respond to the magnitude" of the 2008 damage.
