Don't Panic

Unemployment is still high, and many people are in career limbo, but there are ways to keep job anxiety under control. Executive coaching firm OI Partners/FS&F recently came out with some suggestions about how to stay cool in a heated job market.

Among them:

  • Compile a list of short-term, intermediate and long-term goals and take steps toward them every day.
  • Position yourself for alternative employment opportunities like contract, freelance and part-time work. Some of these areas are likely to rebound before full-time jobs.
  • Make a backup plan both to protect yourself if you end up laid off and to give yourself options if your current career path starts looking limiting.
  • Upgrade your professional skills and your communication skills.
  • Find a mentor to help you strategize career options.
  • Try to find ways to make your current position work before looking elsewhere. Talk with your employer about things like negative performance reviews or missed promotions.
