A developer that has already made a mark in Worcester has agreed to buy Unum Group’s former office building on Chestnut Street, and may convert it into space for college classrooms and student housing.
Winn Development of Boston has agreed to buy the property for an undisclosed sum, CEO Gilbert Winn said Friday through a spokesman. The potential purchase still needs to satisfy due diligence requirements and other conditions, the spokesman said.
Commercial space could also be part of the overall development, along with market-rate housing, Winn said through a spokesman.
Terms and conditions were also not disclosed.
The former Unum building is a sizable downtown landmark, about three blocks west of the DCU Center. It dates to the 1920s. The six-story structure contains about 300,000 square feet of space.
Unum Group moved out of the building in 2013 to a new, seven-story structure in CitySquare.
Discussions regarding the potential purchase were with Winn’s acquisition team, led by Rachel Edwards, the spokesman said.
Winn redeveloped the former Worcester Vocational Technical High School in Lincoln Square into the Voke Lofts apartments, which opened last year.
