Massachusetts lost 6,100 jobs in January, but the unemployment rate remained at 3.5 percent.

According to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, the month-to-month loss of jobs isn’t indicative of the 29,000 jobs gained since January 2017.

Over the year, the state’s unemployment rate decreased from the 3.9 percent in January 2017, with the highest job gains in construction; leisure and hospitality; and professional, scientific and business services.

In January, professional, scientific and business services added 2,500 jobs and 13,300 over the year.

Construction actually lost 1,400 jobs in January, but gained 7,200 over the year.

The leisure and hospitality business had a good year with 9,900 jobs gained, but a slow month of January with 500 jobs lost.

The state’s labor office reported similar stagnancy in manufacturing, which gained 700 jobs over the year but lost 800 in January.
