The Associated Industries of Massachusetts Business Confidence Index took another small step toward "neutral" in April, rising seven-tenths of a point to a score of 47.5.
That's 12.1 points better than its April 2009 score and the 12th gain for the index in the last 14 months.
AIM said "there's no doubt" that the index's slow but steady increase "represents a trend towards recovery." The organization warned, though, that the state's economy "has by no means escaped the full impact of the downturn."
A score of 50 is considered neutral. The index hit an all-time low of 33.3 in February 2009.
The Future Index, which asks employers to predict business conditions six months in the future increased to 50.9 from 50 in March.
The Company Index, which asks employers to report on conditions within their own companies remained above 50, but decreased from 51.4 in March to 51.3 last month.
