Clinton Hospital's board of trustees has approved plans for a $15-million, 28,000-square-foot building that will house a new emergency department.
The hospital said the volume of patients visiting the emergency department has grown from 9,000 to 14,000 a year since 1990. The new department, which will take up the bottom half of the new building, is twice the size of the existing space and will improve patient flow and privacy. It will include more space for triage and for family members to stay with patients, as well as a secure area for mental health patients.
The second floor of the building will be reserved for future growth.
The S/L/A/M Collaborative of Connecticut began designing the building last summer, and Turner Construction Co. Of New York City has been hired to oversee the project, which is still waiting on town approval.
