Central Mass. Jobless Rates Fall

Jobless rates fell throughout Central Massachusetts in March while the state's unemployment rate dropped to 6.5 percent, the Patrick Administration announced today.

The Worcester area gained nearly 2,200 jobs, which brought the area's unemployment rate down to 6.8 percent from 7.9 percent in February.

Improvements were recorded for other areas:

  • The Framingham area's rate dropped to 4.7 percent from 5.6 percent in February, with a gain of more than 750 jobs.
  • Northern Worcester County also saw gains. The Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner area's jobless rate fell to 8.8 percent from 10 percent, with a gain of more than 500 jobs. The Athol area's rate also fell, to 8.5 percent from 9.9 percent. The state said Athol gained more than 100 jobs in March.

The administration cautioned that the numbers released today were not seasonally adjusted and may show different levels and trends than the statewide seasonally adjusted estimates.
