Inbound commuter rail trains from Framingham will be replaced by shuttle buses on weekends starting Feb. 29 through May because of construction.
Crews will be adding a safety technology called positive train control, which can automatically reduce a train’s speed or stop it to avoid a collision or derailment. The capability is being installed across the MBTA system.
Trains will run as normal from Worcester through Ashland, with shuttle buses replacing trains from Framingham inbound. Shuttles will stop at each subsequent station until Wellesley Farms, where they will then head directly to the Back Bay station.
One weekend will serve as an exception, with regular train service: March 14 and 15. The shuttle schedule otherwise will run through May.
Similar work is already affecting the Franklin commuter rail line, with shuttles running weekends through March. On that line, shuttles run each station through Norwood Central, at which point they head directly to Readville, to pick up another train to head to South Station.
