Framingham energy firm Ameresco has secured a $58-million U.S. Navy contract to implement an energy resiliency project at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.
The project features on-site generation, battery storage, and microgrid controls to maximize energy security at the shipyard while reducing energy costs. As part of the project, Ameresco will expand on shipyard’s existing 14-megawatt power plant, by installing a new 7.5-megawatt combined heat and power plant while also deploying a 1.0 MW/2.0 MWh battery energy storage system and upgrading the site’s electrical distribution system.
All measures are designed to operate in compliance with all relevant U.S. Department of Defense and Navy cybersecurity requirements.
The project is expected to generate more than $175 million in guaranteed cost savings over the 22-year performance period following construction.
