Bruce McLeish, vice president of energy supply and risk management, Ameresco Inc.

McLeish

Bruce McLeish  is joining Ameresco, the Framingham-based energy efficiency company, with big plans to grow the company and help customers save energy and money. Right now, though, he’s working on hiring some sales people—and finding himself a place to live.

Vital Stats:
Age:  49
Residence:  To be determined. I now live in Pennsylvania, but will be relocating soon.
Family:  Married, one daughter.
Education:  Bachelor’s in chemical engineering, Syracuse University; master’s in professional writing, Emerson College.
Previous job: Vice president, business development, Fibrowatt of Pennsylvania.
Start date at new job:  Sept. 13

Q.
How are you settling in at your new office?
A. Ameresco has a great entrepreneurial culture, which is exactly what I was looking for, so I am settling in just fine. They're open to new ideas, and in the energy industry there is a lot of opportunity to create new ways for our customers to save money and help them use energy more wisely.

Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. The potential for expanding our business is tremendous. Therefore I believe managing growth will be a challenge. We want to grow without compromising the quality of our customer relationships or our entrepreneurial culture.

Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. Nothing like it. I thought I'd either do something in sports medicine or biology. The route I took to this job included trading electricity, and who knew that was even possible?

Q. What could local and state governments do to make things better for your business?
A. Washington is not likely to establish any kind of energy efficiency goals or requirements for the country, but state and local governments can certainly set their own. Managing energy wisely is one of the best ways for businesses and communities to reduce their costs and their carbon footprint. So setting their own goals in this area is a win-win.

Q.
What's the best way to keep your energy and motivation up when you're having a long day?
A. Just knowing how much opportunity there is in our industry keeps me energized. I get excited knowing that if I make the right decisions and take the right actions customers will benefit and our business will grow.

Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. I have always liked Legal Seafood for a business lunch. When it's just me, however, I like Zippity Do Dog, a small hot dog stand right outside our office on Speen Street. They have a meat sauce that is similar to the one served at New York System restaurants in Rhode Island, where I grew up.

Q. Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
A. Playing tennis and soccer; reading fiction.

Q. What's on your to-do list for the next couple of days?
A. Hire some sales people.
