Mass. Workplace Deaths Down To 59 In 2009

In 2009, the number of fatal workplace injuries in New England fell to their lowest level since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics began keeping track of such statistics in 1992.

Massachusetts had the greatest number of on-the-job fatalities in the region with 59 followed by Connecticut with 34. The Bureau noted that Massachusetts and Connecticut have the two largest workforces in New England.

The Massachusetts total was a decrease of nine from the previous year, and the lowest total for the commonwealth since 2002. The number of workplace fatalities in Connecticut increased by six over 2008. Vermont and Rhode Island also reported increases.

The most workplace deaths in Massachusetts were characterized by the bureau as transportation accidents followed by contact with objects and falls.
