Technological and economic changes affect every part of a company's operations, and staffing is no exception. These days, according to the HR research group Staffing.org, most human resources departments need to incorporate new sorts of skills, from developing complicated evaluation metrics to analyzing the relationships among a company's departments.
The Staffing.org article, written by David Earle, compares the shift in the dominant staffing model in the 21st Century to changes that have occurred over the years in accounting. Where bookkeeping skills were once sufficient to handle a company's finances, these days corporations are looking for financial managers with expertise in money management, financing instruments and risk management.
Similarly, Earle says, staffing professionals in larger companies now need to be experts in three areas: measurements and metrics, business operations and technology.
HR departments must come up with systems to measure how quickly and effectively positions are filled. They also need to be able to fit their departments into the complex needs of the corporation, considering aspects like the skills that new growth demands from employees, the way that hiring affects sales numbers and the interactions between operating managers and hiring managers. With technology changing probably faster than any other aspect of the business, HR must also be able to use social media and modern staffing software to post jobs, find candidates and move them through the hiring process.
