BJ’s makes Zarkin’s post permanent

Natick-based BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. said that Herb Zarkin, longtime chairman of the company’s board of directors, has been elected president and CEO of the company.

Since November, Zarkin has been interim CEO. He’s been a member of BJ’s board of directors since 1996, and chairman of the board since 1997, a position he’ll keep.

Between 1993 and 1997, Zarkin was president and CEO of Waban Inc., which operated BJ’s as well as HomeBase, another warehouse merchandise business.

Zarkin said he wants to focus the company’s attention on merchandising and membership in 2007.

BJ’s began in New England in 1984, and now has 172 stores in 16 eastern states.
