Massachusetts continues to lead new economy

Massachusetts is leading the way in the nation in adapting to an increasingly knowledge-based economy, according to the 2007 State New Economy Index.

The Bay State is at the top of the index, which was compiled by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. Behind Massachusetts, but in the top five, are New Jersey, Maryland, Washington and California.

The index tracks how state economies are transforming from an old industrial economic model to a model that focuses on the creation and retention of "high value-added, high-wage jobs."

Massachusetts has held the top spot on two earlier versions of the index released in 1999 and 2002.
