The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced Oct. 6 the award of almost $1.2 million from the last round of funding from the Gov. Charlie Baker Administration’s Shared Streets and Spaces program, including $74,789 to Central Massachusetts communities.

The program assists Massachusetts cities and towns in making changes to curbs, streets and parking spaces or lots. With this final funding, the program will have given out a total of $10.2 million intended to fund 124 projects in 103 communities.

In Central Massachusetts, Berlin was awarded $39,288.99 to improve spaces for pedestrians and cyclists along Central/Carter Streets and Woodward Avenue, thus improving local businesses, the library and the First Parish Church. New benches will be added.

Worcester was awarded $35,500 to install pilot measures to demonstrate traffic calming and speed reduction approaches to ultimately create safer school routes for children and support for increased rates of walking and biking in residential areas.
