Aquarion Water Company, based in Bridgeport, Conn., has issued water restrictions for customers located in Millbury, following statewide drought designations by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental affairs, the company announced on Tuesday.
Most of the state is currently designated as a Level 2 significant drought, including most of Central Mass., with the state’s southeast region designated as a Level 3 Critical drought. Through its restrictions, Aquarion said it hopes to reduce water use by 10%.
As such, Aquarion is urging all of its customers to immediately shut off irrigation systems. Water waste is prohibited for all customers, requiring them to repair controllable leaks and banning them from operating sprinkler and irrigation systems with broken parts that may lead to unnecessary water use.
Commercial, industrial and institutional businesses are urged to identify and repair leaks in their plumbing, irrigation systems and services lines. They are asked to reduce vehicle washing if less than 50% of their water is recycled, except in instances necessary for health, sanitation or public safety. Those customers are prohibited from washing paved areas by any means, except where necessary to alleviate a possible public health and safety risk, according to Aquarion’s announcement.
Residential properties are urged to repair any leaks in their water systems and are similarly prohibited from washing paved areas. Government customers have been asked to shut down all town-operated irrigation systems and fountains.
