Compensation increased in more than 80 percent of the country's 3,112 counties in 2008, including by 3 percent in Worcester County, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
In Worcester County, the average compensation per job was $55,569 last year compared to $53,847 the prior year. Total compensation for the county reached $18.9 billion last year after hitting $18.3 billion in 2007.
Similarly, Norfolk County's average compensation per job was $65,500 last year. The year before, it was $63,937.
In Suffolk County, the average job paid $89,469 in 2008 after paying $87,539 in 2007.
The country's medium-sized counties, those with total compensation between $1 billion and $10 billion, accounted for 21.8 percent of all counties in the country and for 25.8 percent of total national compensation. Average annual compensation per job grew by 3.1 percent in those counties last year.
Small counties, those with total compensation of less than $1 billion, represent 72.8 percent of all counties in the United States but only 8.3 percent of total national compensation.
The average annual compensation per job in small counties increased by 3.7 percent between 2007 and 2008, the bureau said.
