AG: Restaurant Owner Kept Tips, Penalized Workers

A popular restaurant on Park Ave. in Worcester is on the hook for more than $10,000 in fines and penalties for allegedly mistreating employees.

Weidong "Wilson" Wang, owner of Baba Sushi and the restaurant's corporate owner, Y Non Ren LLC, have been ordered by state Attorney General Martha Coakley's office to pay $7,700 in restitution to eight employees and a $2,600 fine for allegedly violating several state wage, employment and record-keeping laws.

Coakley's office alleges that Wang required employees to give a sizeable portion of their tips to restaurant managers, in violation of the state tips law. The AG's investigation was prompted by complaints from employees. Coakley's office said Wang coerced and penalized employees who cooperated with the investigation.

Wang was also cited for failing to pay wages in a timely manner, failing to provide pay stubs to employees, misclassifying employees as independent contractors and record keeping violations.

The investigation was conducted by the AG's fair labor division.
