In its monthly National Employment Report, payroll firm ADP said private employers hired 215,000 workers in December, the largest gain since February.
It also adjusted its November employment estimate from 118,000 to 148,000.
According to ADP, whose data is derived from payroll information, goods-producing employment rose by 28,000 jobs. That, along with a gain of 39,000 construction jobs helped offset the 11,000-job decline in manufacturing employment.
Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics, said the job market held firm, despite ongoing fiscal cliff negotiations.
"Businesses even became somewhat more aggressive in their hiring at year end," he said. "Most encouraging is the revival in construction jobs, although the December gain was likely lifted by rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy. "
