The Discovery Museums in Acton plans to break ground this summer on an expansion that will double the size of the building and allow for exhibits from two existing museums on site to be combined into a single building as part of an $8.4-million fundraising campaign.
The site includes the Science Discovery Museum and the Children's Discovery Museum. The children's museum, which opened in 1982, would no longer exist as a separate facility when the new building opens later this year. The museums hope to reuse the space for other purposes, such as for events.
The Discovery Museums has nearly completed a $8.4-million fundraising campaign that will pay for the expansion and renovation. A prior phase of $1.5 million allowed for a new fully accessible playscape area with a treehouse called Discovery Woods.
Since Discovery Woods opened in July, visitation rose by 30 percent, the museums said.
The new museum will also be fully handicapped-compliant, the museums said.
On Wednesday, the museums said they were launching the final, $350,000 leg of the fundraising campaign to cover the remaining costs.
